Why the motion inside the drum decides your coating

Table of Contents

Most coating pans produce good results under ideal conditions. Real production brings different operators, changing humidity, more SKUs and rising ingredient costs — and that is when uneven layers, clumping and rework appear. The cause is usually not the recipe, but the motion inside the drum.

Key takeaways

  • Classic pans rely on tumbling — and on the skill of one experienced operator
  • Multi-spin coating creates a controlled vortex with an independently rotating disc and drum
  • Excess coating is reincorporated, which improves yield and cuts rework
  • Recipe-based parameters keep batches consistent across shifts

Why classic pans struggle at scale

In a conventional coating pan, product tumbles. How evenly the coating spreads depends on fill level, pan speed, the moment syrup or chocolate is added — and very often on the feel of one master operator. Add humidity changes and several products a day, and the result varies from batch to batch: dead zones, doubles and clumps, broken centres, and coating that ends up on the pan wall instead of the product.

What multi-spin vortex coating changes

Tipton’s ECX system replaces tumbling with an engineered flow. An independently rotating disc and drum create vortex and centrifugal motion, so product circulates through the coating zone in a structured way. For a producer that means:

  • Speed — coating media is incorporated faster, which shortens cycle times
  • Yield — excess coating falls back into the mix and is reincorporated instead of wasted
  • Consistency — controlled stirring gives uniform layers and fewer dead zones
  • Gentle handling — lower collision damage for fragile centres
  • Stability — recipe-based parameters reduce operator variance

What you can coat

  • Dragées and sugar shells with a uniform, premium finish
  • Chocolate and compound layers on almonds, hazelnuts and other centres
  • Sugar, oil and glaze coatings for gummies and snacks
  • Outside confectionery: nutraceutical and fine-powder applications — the ECX Ps model also mixes, granulates and sizes fine particles in one unit

Cleaning and changeovers

More SKUs mean more changeovers. An open top and a tilting, draining structure make cleaning fast, so switching from a dark-chocolate almond to a white-chocolate dragée doesn’t cost half a shift.

Coating plus printing

Coated products are an ideal canvas for branding. Planned as one line, coating and IMAGO direct printing turn a standard dragée or coated nut into a branded or seasonal product — the kind of item corporate-gift buyers ask for.

Is it worth it for you?

For very small or occasional batches, a classic pan can be enough — and we will tell you so. Multi-spin coating pays off when volumes, product variety or labour costs grow. For an evaluation we need your product type, coating method, batch sizes and current bottlenecks; where possible we test your own products before you invest. For European projects, technical support is available through a partner in Germany.

Check whether the ECX fits your coating

Send us your product, batch sizes and current issues — we advise honestly whether the ECX makes sense for your volume.
